Nancy Leigh-Smith

Nancy Leigh-Smith has been studying and practicing yoga for many years and has been teaching for 17 years. During ten years as part of a community that emphasized meditation, scriptural study, seva (service), chanting, and devotion to a spiritual leader, her practice was centered around the non-physical aspects of yoga, and included asana (posture) practice only sporadically. Following a car accident, she delved into asana practice to recover from a back injury. Inspired by her own experience of healing, she began teaching. Nancy is a graduate of the three-year Advanced Studies program at the Yoga Room, Berkeley, where she studied with Donald Moyer, Mary Lou Weprin, Gay White, Sandy Blaine, and other members of the faculty. She took part in the first Relax & Renew® Training (2001) and first Advanced Relax & Renew® Training (2006) with Judith Lasater at the Iyengar Yoga Institute in San Francisco, and is a certified Advanced Relax and Renew Trainer®. Nancy also holds a California credential in Health & Safety/Physical Fitness. She taught at San Lorenzo and Hayward Adult Schools, where her yoga classes were co-sponsored by Kaiser, and where she also incorporated yoga into her English as a Second Language classes. She taught at Alameda Yoga Station from 2004–2012, and Castro Valley Yoga from 2004–2009. From June, 2009–December, 2012, she owned Yoga in the Middle Studio in Castro Valley. Following the studio’s closure, Nancy resumed teaching at Castro Valley Yoga, in the current location on Castro Valley Boulevard and San Miguel Avenue. She welcomes adult students of all ages, sizes, and abilities to the practice of yoga.
